Private diaries, army postal service

The Federal Archives-Military Archives stores several hundred personal papers and collections of private origin relating to German military history. These records are continually supplemented by new acquisitions.

Personal papers and collections fill in some of the gaps in the official holdings. With a high proportion of authentic and contemporary eye-witness accounts in the form of diaries, recollections and soldiers' letters to family members, they also enhance the official military archives from the viewpoint of members of the German military.

The records contained in personal papers and military history collections constitute a multifaceted and valuable source for a wide range of subjects, which targets issues relating to the history of events, politics, society and organisations, considers links with the history of everyday life, mentality and culture, analyses mood, thoughts and actions, and studies individual or group biographies.
