The Central Office for the Investigation of National Socialist Crimes, a joint facility of the State Justice Administrations, was set up in Ludwigsburg in 1958.

The Central Office is housed at the "Schorndorfer Tor" in an office extension to a building (former women’s prison) built in the middle of the 19th Century. A branch archive of Department B of the Federal Archives, responsible for administering central office documents and providing these for use, has also been located in this building since January 1st, 2000. The reading room offers space for eight users.

The Schorndorfer Torhaus, erected in 1760 as a customs and excise house, can be found in the immediate vicinity of the offices and archives buildings. Since September 2004, the Federal Archives have presented a permanent exhibition concerning how Nationalist Socialist crimes are legally dealt with.

The Federal Archives branch offers students and teachers a special set of instructive learning offerings as an extramural learning location.
