Central Administration Department (Department Z)

Department Z is responsible for central administration of the Federal Archives. It has the task of providing the personnel, organisational, technical and financial means to allow fulfilment of the specialist archiving tasks in the individual departments of the Federal Archives.

The Department is split into eight Sections, which cover the following areas of responsibility:

  • Personnel matters; personnel development; further education
  • Organisational matters; new control elements
  • Legal department; internal auditing
  • Property and building matters; work safety; internal services
  • Budget; procurement
  • IT infrastructure; system technology; IT user services and data backup (not including the Berlin metropolitan area)
  • Fundamental IT development in the entire Federal Archive; IT infrastructure; system technology; IT user services and data backup in the Berlin metropolitan area; database administration; development of specific application software
  • Administration in the Berlin metropolitan area

The headquarters of Department Z is located in Koblenz, with two Sections also being co-located in Berlin-Lichterfelde.
