130 years ago, on 1 November 1895, brothers Max and Emil Skladanowsky showed their “living pictures” to a public audience for the first time at the Wintergarten variety theatre in Berlin.
To mark this anniversary, the Federal Archives are making the Skladanowskys‘ extensive estate accessible to the public and presenting films, equipment, documents, photographs, and other finds in the exhibition “‘Did I invent film?’ Max Skladanowsky – Pioneer, Visionary & Impostor”.
The accompanying publication explains selected exhibits, expands on the exhibition and serves as an exhibition guide. Contributions from experts on early film explore certain aspects of Skladanowsky‘s life and work in greater depth. These include insights into what is believed to be the world‘s first film music and the first camera constructed by Max Skladanowsky.
The title is also available in German translation: “‘Habe ich den Film erfunden?’ Max Skladanowsky – Pionier, Visionär & Hochstapler”
